Citi rolls out Custody+ platform and will add Bitcoin custody for institutional clients later in 2026

Citigroup took another step toward integrating digital assets into traditional banking on Tuesday with the launch of Custody+, a custody and asset servicing platform designed to operate across increasingly continuous financial markets. The bank also confirmed that it plans to begin offering direct Bitcoin custody for institutional clients by the end of 2026.

The new platform brings together custody, event processing, settlement, liquidity, and other asset servicing functions within a common infrastructure. According to Citi, its Single Event Processing (SEP) technology, deployed in the United States, currently processes more than 80% of the institution’s total event volume in real time.

Bitcoin Enters Bank Custody Infrastructure

The future digital asset offering will begin with Bitcoin and will be integrated into the same architecture used for traditional financial assets. The aim is for institutional clients to manage BTC alongside stocks, bonds, and cash without having to completely separate custody and asset servicing processes.

For Citi, the change addresses a specific operational need. Cryptocurrency markets operate around the clock, while much of the traditional financial infrastructure is still designed around business hours, settlement cycles, and slower processes. Custody+ aims to reduce that friction through near-instant processing and continuous availability.

The bank has also been developing infrastructure for digital assets for some time. Its Citi Token Services platform, for example, enables tokenized deposits to be moved throughout the day in certain markets. Citi had already indicated in its 2026 strategic documentation that digital asset custody would form part of its expansion in the sector.

Institutional Custody Becomes More Competitive

The launch places Citi in an increasingly broad market for services related to institutional digital assets. For large asset managers and investment desks, the proposition is not limited to storing Bitcoin but also involves incorporating it into the same accounting, reporting, compliance, and asset servicing systems used for the rest of their portfolios.

The arrival of a bank custodian of this scale could also reduce one of the operational barriers that still separates Bitcoin from traditional markets: the need to rely on specialized providers for digital asset and key management.

Citi has not yet activated its Bitcoin custody service. Its launch is planned for the end of 2026, meaning details about availability, operational structure, and the scope of the service will emerge during implementation. For now, the announcement shows that Bitcoin is moving further into traditional banking infrastructure, not only as a tradable asset but also as a future asset class held in bank custody.
