Bitcoin Holds $83K as Zcash NU7 Nears

Bitcoin traded around $83,000 on October 21 as technology shares recovered, while Zcash posted one of the stronger moves among major crypto assets. ZEC gained roughly 12% over 24 hours and traded around the $1,270-$1,300 range, coinciding with developers agreeing on a proposed mainnet activation height for the network’s NU7 upgrade.

The two moves unfolded against different immediate catalysts. Bitcoin participated in a broader rebound in risk assets linked to stronger AI-sector earnings, while Zcash had a more asset-specific development as its next network upgrade moved closer to mainnet deployment. The timing does not establish that the NU7 decision alone caused ZEC’s rally.

Zcash’s latest move also follows a volatile period in which the asset previously traded above $1,600 after the launch of a European ZEC investment product. That earlier Zcash rally showed how regulated product launches, derivatives positioning and protocol developments can overlap without representing a single source of demand.

Risk Appetite Improves but Macro Pressure Persists

The broader market backdrop remains mixed. Brent crude traded around $110 per barrel on October 21, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield remained above 5%. Higher energy prices and elevated borrowing costs continue to create a restrictive backdrop for risk assets, even as technology stocks recover from their recent selloff.

Those conditions are particularly relevant to Bitcoin because higher sovereign yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets. The pressure has already become a recurring theme for Bitcoin treasury strategies facing higher yields, although Treasury yields, corporate Bitcoin demand and BTC’s market price should remain analytically separate variables.

Bitcoin also remains below the roughly $87,000 technical region that has recently acted as an important market reference. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve’s official calendar places its next policy meeting on October 27-28. Monetary policy expectations therefore remain a near-term source of volatility despite the latest improvement in risk sentiment.

NU7 Moves Toward November Mainnet Activation

For Zcash, the more concrete development came from the NU7 deployment process. In an October 20 GitHub proposal, developers agreed on block 3,543,405 as the proposed mainnet activation height, corresponding approximately to November 5. The height had received developer approvals but still required final integration into the NU7 specification and compatible node software as of October 21.

The decision advances the previous NU7 roadmap, which had identified November 5 as the target after an October testnet deployment. According to ZIP 259, NU7 reduces Zcash’s target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds while introducing new limits on shielded actions to control validation and synchronization costs.

NU7 also implements the Network Sustainability Mechanism. The upgrade removes 60% of transaction fees from immediate circulation and records that value within public consensus state, with the issuance framework designed to reintroduce value later without increasing Zcash’s overall supply cap.

Another material change is the prohibition of version 4 transactions. Under ZIP 2003, v4 transactions become invalid after NU7 activation, while versions 5 and 6 remain supported. Because Sprout transfers depend on the v4 format, funds left in the legacy Sprout pool would no longer be spendable under the new consensus rules.

That consequence is significant for legacy infrastructure but should not be described as a permanent burn. Sprout balances remain part of issued ZEC supply even after they become unspendable under NU7, and the specification explicitly leaves open the theoretical possibility of a future recovery mechanism, although none is currently promised.

The operational impact also extends beyond Sprout holders. Wallets and transaction services must stop creating v4 transactions for post-activation inclusion, while full nodes, indexers and block explorers need to support the new consensus rules and network protocol requirements.

Zcash therefore enters November with both a market catalyst and a concrete protocol transition approaching. The decisive milestone is not the October price rally but successful incorporation of the activation height, compatible software deployment and mainnet execution at block 3,543,405.
