World Money Rolls Out Across 150+ Countries

World has begun rolling out World Money, a self-custodial financial app combining stablecoin balances, payments, trading, on-chain earning and virtual accounts, across more than 150 countries. The September 17 launch separates money functions from the dedicated World ID experience while allowing existing users to carry over their verification status. The rollout is broad in geographic ambition, but not uniform in functionality, with eligibility and individual features varying by jurisdiction.

In its official launch announcement, World said World Money supports balances across eight currencies, cross-border transfers using supported digital assets, portfolio tracking, transaction history, price alerts and access to Mini Apps. The product is offered by Tools for Humanity, the technology company co-founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania and Max Novendstern. World Money packages several functions that previously required separate wallet, trading, payment and decentralized finance interfaces into one application.

World Money Combines Payments, Trading and Earn

Virtual accounts provide one of the clearest links between conventional banking rails and the self-custodial wallet. Where supported, users can receive fiat transfers that are converted into digital assets. USD virtual accounts use Lead Bank for account issuance and Bridge to convert incoming dollars into USDC, and they can accept employer or paycheck deposits. Ripio-powered accounts in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico instead process local-currency transfers and do not support payroll deposits.

Funding options are also jurisdiction-specific. World said its redesigned Stripe flow is beginning in the United States, where Apple Pay can be used to purchase stablecoins inside the app. Mini Apps provide another layer of functionality, with services including Kalshi, Credit and Morpho available subject to local restrictions and provider requirements. The 150-country footprint therefore should not be read as identical product availability in every market.

The Earn feature extends the app into on-chain lending. Eligible users can deposit assets including WLD, USDC, wETH and wBTC into programs powered by Morpho, which selects the underlying on-chain lending protocols. Displayed APYs are variable snapshots rather than guaranteed returns, with rates depending on Morpho, deposited balances and any promotional rewards. Deposits and withdrawals are processed on-chain, while actual withdrawal timing can vary with network conditions, liquidity and protocol conditions.

Self-Custody Shifts More Responsibility to Users

World Money remains self-custodial, meaning Tools for Humanity does not control users’ wallet keys or encrypted account backups. The app supports multiple login methods, including passkeys, Google accounts, Apple accounts and Orb-based recovery in supported circumstances. If a user loses the device and every configured login method, World says account access cannot be restored. That makes credential management a material part of using the product rather than simply a conventional password-support issue.

The same distinction applies to the financial products inside the interface. World explicitly states that World Money is not a bank and that digital assets, including stablecoins, are not government-insured deposits. Earn also introduces smart-contract and market risk, while third-party services can impose separate eligibility and compliance requirements. A streamlined interface can reduce operational friction between fiat, stablecoins and DeFi, but it does not remove the underlying financial or technical risks.

The next measurable milestone will be actual usage rather than geographic rollout alone. Stablecoin balances, virtual-account activity, Earn deposits and cross-border transaction volumes would provide clearer evidence of whether World Money is developing into a meaningful financial rail. Until those metrics emerge, the launch primarily establishes the infrastructure and distribution footprint for a more integrated self-custodial finance product, while regional availability and regulatory requirements will determine how much of that feature set users can actually access.
