Metaplanet CEO says $322M Bitcoin move was internal custody transfer, denies sale

Metaplanet moved 5,014 BTC, worth roughly $322 million at the time, between custodial addresses, prompting speculation that the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company was reducing its holdings. CEO Simon Gerovich rejected that interpretation, saying the transaction was a routine custody operation and no Bitcoin was sold.

Gerovich said the Bitcoin remained within Metaplanet-controlled custody addresses and reaffirmed a total treasury balance of 43,000 BTC. That figure is also displayed on the company’s official Bitcoin analytics dashboard, providing a corporate data point separate from third-party wallet trackers. The clarification turned what initially appeared to some observers as a potential disposal into an internal treasury movement.

Public wallets turn custody movements into market signals

Metaplanet publishes its Bitcoin addresses, making major treasury movements visible on-chain as they happen. That transparency allows investors to monitor holdings independently, but a large transfer can generate speculation before its operational purpose becomes clear. Gerovich specifically cited the visibility of the company’s addresses when explaining why the movement had been detected in real time.

The transfer also illustrates the difference between moving Bitcoin and selling it. According to Gerovich, approximately $322 million in BTC was transferred for around $8 in network fees. A wallet-to-wallet custody transaction does not by itself demonstrate that Bitcoin reached an exchange, changed beneficial ownership or was sold into the market.

For a company built around a Bitcoin treasury strategy, that distinction carries added weight. Metaplanet describes Bitcoin as its core treasury reserve asset and says its strategy includes continually expanding and managing those holdings. Large on-chain movements can therefore attract heightened scrutiny because investors may interpret them as signals about treasury policy before the company provides context.

Metaplanet’s Bitcoin strategy is becoming broader

The custody movement comes as Metaplanet develops businesses beyond straightforward Bitcoin accumulation. Its official disclosures show that the company launched a joint study in July with Metaplanet Securities, JPYC and Progmat around Bitcoin-linked digital credit products and security-token infrastructure. The initiative forms part of Project Nova, which Metaplanet describes as an effort to build Bitcoin-focused financial infrastructure in Japan.

That broader strategy makes custody management and communication increasingly important as Bitcoin becomes connected to more of the company’s operating plans. Internal reallocations may be operationally routine, but their visibility can produce immediate market interpretations when billions of dollars in corporate crypto reserves are publicly traceable. For Metaplanet, the August transfer demonstrates both sides of on-chain transparency: stronger external visibility and a greater need to explain large wallet movements quickly and precisely.
