Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned that the network risks becoming an “unwieldy mess” unless protocol complexity is aggressively reduced. He tied the concern to codebase bloat and layered cryptography that, in his view, erodes trustlessness, security, and self-sovereignty.
To address the issue, Buterin proposed a two-phase program of deliberate simplification: systematic “garbage collection” followed by a period of controlled, gradual ossification to stabilize the protocol. The plan is framed as a reset that first removes complexity and then limits churn to preserve predictability.

Phase One: “Garbage Collection” to Cut Technical Debt
Buterin described the situation as technical debt that, if left unchecked, concentrates deep knowledge and effective control in a narrow set of specialists. His remedy begins with pruning legacy functionality and cryptographic dependencies to restore auditability and reduce attack surface.
Targets for removal include obsolete features, rarely used functionality, legacy transaction types, and specific precompiles that would be moved into smart contracts. The stated goal is to shrink the protocol surface area so fewer components require privileged understanding to verify or secure.
Phase Two: Controlled Ossification and the “Walkaway Test”
The second phase calls for gradual ossification after cleanup, pausing major protocol churn so the network can stabilize. This stabilization posture is intended to improve predictability for node operators and developers and to help Ethereum pass a “walkaway test” where core invariants hold without active central maintainers.
The cleanup and stabilization approach carries practical operational and market implications across the ecosystem. For developers, a reduced surface area should improve review efficiency and shorten audit cycles, while for node operators and infrastructure providers, a leaner protocol could lower barriers to full validation and support decentralized participation.
Buterin warned that failing to act could increase effective centralization, invite regulatory scrutiny, and slow innovation as the learning curve steepens for newcomers. Traders and risk managers may translate that into structural governance and execution risk that could weigh on Ethereum’s long-term value proposition.
