Strategy Posts Huge Q2 Loss as Bitcoin Treasury Markdown Hits Earnings

Strategy reported a major second-quarter loss for 2026 after a sharp Bitcoin price decline forced a multibillion-dollar markdown on its digital-asset holdings. The result shows how a concentrated Bitcoin treasury can dominate corporate earnings even when operating revenue improves.

The quarter was defined by an $8.32 billion unrealized loss on digital assets, which overwhelmed the company’s core business performance. Revenue rose 6.9% year over year to $122.4 million, but fair-value accounting turned operating stability into a headline loss.

Bitcoin Valuation Swings Drive the Reported Loss

Strategy held 843,775 Bitcoin as of July 26, 2026, according to company disclosures. Its acquisition cost was $63.69 billion, while the market value stood near $54.77 billion, leaving a nearly $9 billion gap between cost basis and reported market value.

That spread explains why the quarter looked so different from the prior year. In the comparable 2025 period, Strategy recorded a $14.05 billion unrealized gain on its digital assets and reported a large profit, underscoring the extreme earnings sensitivity created by fair-value treatment of Bitcoin.

The accounting shift does not necessarily reflect a deterioration in the software business. It reflects the mark-to-market volatility of a balance sheet built around Bitcoin exposure.

For investors, that distinction matters but does not remove risk. Strategy’s reported earnings will remain heavily tied to Bitcoin price movements as long as the company holds such a large crypto treasury, making BTC volatility the dominant input in equity analysis.

Management Moves to Protect Liquidity

Management responded with balance-sheet actions aimed at reducing near-term financial pressure. Strategy repurchased $1.50 billion in convertible notes at an 8% discount, using debt reduction as a way to lower funded risk during market stress.

The company also increased its U.S. dollar reserve to $3.75 billion, which it said provides more than two years of coverage for dividend payments and interest obligations. That reserve gives liquidity protection against further Bitcoin-driven accounting swings.

Strategy also initiated a $1.0 billion share repurchase program for MSTR common stock and continued repurchases of STRC preferred shares. Those steps suggest management is trying to defend capital structure flexibility while market confidence remains fragile.

The stock reacted modestly lower after the report, reflecting investor focus on the scale of the crypto markdown rather than the company’s revenue growth. The reaction shows shareholders are still valuing Strategy primarily through its Bitcoin exposure and funding model.

For credit analysts, the key issue is whether liquidity reserves, reduced convertible debt and operating cash flow can offset continuing volatility in the Bitcoin treasury. The company has more flexibility after the repurchase actions, but its financial profile remains tightly linked to crypto market direction.

For institutional investors, the quarter reinforces a broader lesson about corporate digital-asset treasuries. Large Bitcoin positions can create upside in bull markets, but under fair-value accounting they can also produce large reported losses that obscure otherwise stable operating results.

The next reporting periods will test whether Strategy’s liquidity measures are enough to reassure creditors and equity holders. Until Bitcoin exposure is materially reduced or offset, the company’s results will continue to show the accounting and market consequences of holding one of the world’s largest corporate BTC treasuries.
