Hyperscale Data Ends Bitcoin Mining in Michigan

Hyperscale Data has shut down all Bitcoin mining operations at its Michigan facility as it converts the site into an AI data center under a long-term services agreement. All Bitcoin miners at the facility were switched off effective September 1, 2026, according to the company’s official PR Newswire announcement.

The transition centers on a master services agreement with an unnamed California-based neocloud provider covering an initial 20 MW of AI compute capacity. The contract has a 10-year initial term with two optional five-year extensions and could generate more than $1.2 billion over its maximum 20-year duration, according to Hyperscale Data’s projections.

Michigan Site Shifts From Mining to AI

The agreement also gives the customer an option for an additional 32 MW, potentially increasing contracted capacity to 52 MW. If that expansion is exercised and maintained through the extension periods, Hyperscale Data estimates total contract revenue could exceed $3 billion, while the broader Michigan campus is being developed toward substantially greater power capacity over time.

Repurposing the facility requires the company to redirect infrastructure previously dedicated to Bitcoin mining toward AI workloads. Hyperscale plans to sell mining equipment from the Michigan operation and use proceeds to support the build-out. The strategic shift reallocates power, cooling and capital from Bitcoin hashing toward contracted AI data center services, while limited mining operations continue at the company’s Montana footprint.

The company has also drawn heavily on its Bitcoin treasury to finance the transition. As of August 30, Hyperscale Data held approximately 214.97 BTC worth about $16.7 million, according to a separate company disclosure distributed through PR Newswire. That represents a decline of roughly 79% from the approximately 1,006 BTC the company reported holding in late July, reflecting substantial treasury monetization as development spending increased.

AI Pivot Changes Hyperscale’s Risk Profile

The strategic shift has coincided with pressure on Hyperscale Data shares, with GPUS falling to record lows around the transition and dropping sharply following a recent reverse stock split. The market response highlights investor uncertainty over whether the value of the long-duration AI contracts can offset execution risks and the reduced exposure to Bitcoin.

Moving away from mining in Michigan changes the company’s economic profile. Bitcoin mining exposes operators to cryptocurrency prices, mining difficulty and energy costs, while AI hosting depends more heavily on infrastructure deployment, customer commitments and reliable long-term capacity. Hyperscale is effectively exchanging part of its Bitcoin-linked volatility for execution risk tied to a large, capital-intensive AI build-out.

The initial 20 MW deployment will therefore be an important test of the strategy. Future value depends not only on completing infrastructure for the contracted customer but also on whether the 32 MW expansion and wider campus development materialize. Hyperscale Data’s pivot offers the prospect of recurring contracted AI revenue, but its projected multibillion-dollar value remains dependent on successful deployment and customers exercising long-term options.
