Bitcoin is approaching a long-term price threshold that CryptoQuant contributors view as an important test for the market’s emerging recovery. With BTC trading around $82,000 on October 16, the immediate obstacle sits near $87,171, where a 20-month trend reference identified as an “inflection frontier” currently stands above price.
In a CryptoQuant analysis by GugaOnChain, the contributor argued that Bitcoin has completed the reset that followed its October 2025 peak. His Market Cycle Signals framework uses monthly Bollinger Bands to divide the cycle into three zones: an accumulation level around $51,746, the $87,171 inflection point and a distribution region near $122,596. Bitcoin remains between the accumulation and inflection levels rather than having confirmed a breakout into the upper portion of that framework.
The $87,000 region carries additional significance because Bitcoin opened 2026 near $87,490. That puts the long-term technical level close to a previous market reference that has already acted as resistance during the year. A move through the area would therefore require Bitcoin to recover both a long-duration trend threshold and a price zone where sellers have previously emerged.
Bullish Cycle Signals Have Improved
The broader CryptoQuant picture has become more constructive since Bitcoin’s July low. An October research report said the firm’s Bull Score Index had risen from 20 in late July to 90 on September 26 before remaining in strongly bullish territory, while Bitcoin recovered from approximately $73,000 to as high as $87,000 during the measured period. CryptoQuant has characterized that transition as an early bull-market regime rather than a mature expansion phase.
A separate Bull-Bear Market Cycle Indicator has also remained above zero, which CryptoQuant contributors interpret as a bullish regime. The indicator measures the difference between the Profit & Loss Index and its 365-day moving average, making it distinct from the 20-month Bollinger Band framework. Multiple CryptoQuant indicators are therefore pointing toward improving market structure, but none independently guarantees that Bitcoin will clear $87,000 or revisit its record high.
The recovery follows a year in which Bitcoin repeatedly struggled to convert rallies into durable trend changes. Earlier in 2026, the market failed to reclaim a major $68,000 trend line, while subsequent improvements in demand helped BTC eventually move through higher resistance. More recently, Bitcoin briefly climbed above $85,000, bringing the current $87,000 test within reach.
Resistance Still Separates Recovery From Breakout
The market has nevertheless shown that positive flows and rising prices can coexist with abrupt reversals. In September, Bitcoin ETFs recorded $347 million in net inflows even as BTC fell below $84,000, illustrating why fund creations alone cannot confirm a sustained price breakout. Price acceptance above resistance remains different from temporary momentum through it.
Longer-term accumulation offers another supportive but similarly incomplete signal. Large Bitcoin holders have previously accumulated tens of thousands of BTC during periods of weak sentiment, but accumulation does not establish when that supply behavior will translate into higher prices.
For now, $87,171 is best treated as a conditional threshold within CryptoQuant’s framework rather than a predetermined launch point for new highs. Bitcoin remains roughly $5,000 below that level, while the upper monthly band around $122,596 sits close to the region of its 2025 record. The improving cycle indicators strengthen the recovery case, but reclaiming and holding the $87,000 area would provide substantially clearer evidence that the market has progressed beyond rebuilding its base.
