Trump Media Posts $238M Q2 Loss as Crypto Treasury Drives Earnings Volatility

Trump Media & Technology Group reported a $238.1 million net loss for the second quarter of 2026 as losses tied to digital assets and securities dwarfed growth in its operating revenue. Revenue rose 89% year over year to $1.67 million, while TMTG recorded $116.7 million in realized and unrealized losses on digital assets and pledged digital assets. The quarter shows how heavily TMTG’s reported earnings have become exposed to its crypto and investment portfolio.

Investment losses contributed another $71.8 million, driven primarily by $73.7 million in unrealized losses on equity securities and partly offset by gains from Bitcoin-related derivatives and option premiums. Those valuation effects were substantially larger than TMTG’s quarterly revenue base, making financial-market movements a major driver of the headline loss.

Bitcoin Treasury Moves Into Active Risk Management

TMTG held 9,477.16 BTC at June 30 with a cost basis of about $1.01 billion and fair value of $557.1 million. It also held roughly 756.1 million CRO with a $113.9 million cost basis and fair value of $40.6 million. The gap between cost and quarter-end fair value illustrates the balance-sheet volatility created by TMTG’s digital-asset strategy, although it should not be treated as a realized cash loss.

Management is also moving beyond passive Bitcoin ownership. TMTG disclosed that it sells covered calls and puts, purchases options and uses synthetic-long and collar structures to manage Bitcoin price exposure. At June 30, 2,077.34 BTC was pledged to support its options strategy, while another 4,260.73 BTC backed convertible notes. Derivatives and collateral management have become material components of how the company operates its Bitcoin treasury.

TMTG has additionally deployed part of its Bitcoin through third-party lending, placement and other yield-generation arrangements. Its filing warns that counterparties may rehypothecate assets, unsecured Bitcoin could become difficult to recover during insolvency and some arrangements permit collateral liquidation if margin requirements are missed. Generating additional yield introduces counterparty, liquidity and operational risks beyond Bitcoin price volatility itself.

July Restructuring Raises Direct Bitcoin Holdings

After quarter-end, TMTG sold $159.6 million of equity securities invested in Bitcoin-related products and used the proceeds to purchase Bitcoin directly. By July 31, the company held approximately 14,139 BTC, including pledged Bitcoin, with reported fair value of $890.5 million. The transaction increased TMTG’s direct Bitcoin holdings while reducing part of its exposure through Bitcoin-linked securities.

The company also disclosed that it mutually terminated the proposed Trump Media Group CRO Strategy business combination on August 7. The cancellation removes one planned crypto expansion, but the filing does not characterize it as a broader retreat from digital assets, particularly after TMTG substantially increased its direct Bitcoin position during July.

The contrast with TMTG’s operating business remains pronounced. Its Media and Truth.Fi segments generated $1.67 million in second-quarter revenue while changes in crypto and securities valuations ran into tens of millions of dollars. Traditional operating metrics now explain only part of TMTG’s quarterly financial performance, with treasury valuations, derivatives and counterparty exposure increasingly shaping results.

TMTG’s options and yield strategies may generate premiums or additional income, but they also introduce dependencies on collateral terms, market conditions and third parties. The next test is whether active treasury management can moderate Bitcoin-related earnings volatility without creating risks that offset the returns those strategies are intended to produce.
